DAY 2 – Together in Praise – Bethel Week of Prayer
Day 2: Together in Praise

Have you heard the acronym GOAT before? It means, greatest of all time. People give this title to others who have done incredible things. Whether it’s an athlete or actor, politician, or influencer. People love to argue over who is the GOAT of every category. After seven Super Bowl rings, Tom Brady is arguably the new GOAT. What comes with GOAT status? Praise!

In human terms, no mere mortal can compare with the true GOAT—our God. He was in the beginning. He transcends and surpasses all because there is no other above him or equal to him. God in himself is whole, perfect, without any need of critique. There is no argument about it, God alone is the greatest of all time. When we come to God in prayer, we ought to acknowledge him as the greatest. The way we do that biblically is by praising God. In simple terms, we tell God how much better, how much more excellent he is than anything else. He is beyond rival or comparison, and therefore we praise him.

King David gives us a real-life example of how to praise God. David penned countless psalms communicating his praise toward God for many of the matchless characteristics of God. Look at the following Psalms:

“I will give to the LORD the thanks due to his righteousness,
and I will sing praise to the name of the LORD, the Most High.”
Psalm 7:17 ESV

“Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.”
Psalm 21:13

“The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the LORD!
May your hearts live forever!”
Psalm 22:26

“I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Psalm 34:1

“Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation.”
Psalm 42:5

“Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.”
Psalm 63:3

These are just some of the countless Psalms that communicate praise toward God. One of the beautiful things about praising God is that we are to do it regardless of the season. Today, will you praise him for the ways he is working in your current situation?

Maybe like David, you need strength. Praise the Lord. Maybe you need comfort? Praise the Lord. Maybe, like David, you need hope. Praise the Lord, for he is the only source of hope through deep water. Or are you in a season of plenty and prosperity? Like David, praise the Lord! God’s steadfast love is better than life!

  • Praise God for his attributes and character!
  • Praise God for his unfailing kindness to us as a church, and for his constant presence in our lives.
  • Praise the Lord for the difficult situations in your life, and ask him to be glorified in you.
  • Praise the Lord for the ways in which he is growing our church family amid unprecedented times and challenges.
  • Praise the Lord for our church leaders and staff, and for all those who minister the gospel of Christ.
